Description and Instruction
The ME=WE Pathway Giga Map presents an action research titled Co-Designing Food Revolution for
Social Change at Zayed University, UAE.
It attempted to capture a visual narrative of the research process which was facilitated by ME=WE framework development. It aims to strengthen a process of ‘individual capacity building’ leading to ‘collective capacities’ in order to contribute to positive social change in a path of service. The concept creation and development of ME=WE framework (integrating Mobius Strip, Panarchy, Two Moral Purpose, Permaculture Principles, and Theory U), and the application (how it was applied to the action research) are the two main areas.
The map structured in 6 columns; 1) A proposed model 2) Supporting theories and practices, 3)
ME=WE pathway in a single at the top and multiple expansion process at the bottom, 4) Individual Capacity Building in ME (EGO) Integration Process to WE (ECO), 5) Action Research Timeline visualizing unfolding activities and impact in 3 pillars of the project: Inclusivity, Zero-Waste, and Well-Being from Action-Reflection perspectives, and 6) Top - Prototyping Future with envisioning a social
enterprise biz model, Middle - ME (EGO) Integration Process to WE (ECO), and Bottom - Groundwork to validate assumptions and further understanding of systems and stakeholders using Systemic Design Toolkit.

This Giga-map is an approach to Making Waves, a design consultancy firm in Scandinavia. The map shows multiple scales, systems and sub-systems
that are within the company. It also portrays the complex web of structures that form part of organizations, and what are some of the
components they may need to operate. In hindsight, one of the more interesting parts of this map is the “culture” area, where the relationship between
people’s formation, professional mindsets and team cultures intersect. This is of outmost interest
because it relates to the more “fuzzy” parts of organizations, which is the way that people relate across teams and silos.

CONCEPT OF THE GIGA MAP :
The Giga Map represents the process journey of this project divided into 6 phases. It has topographic illustrations which represent defense on land i.e. Army, with a Camouflage
theme and colors of Indian Army.
The overall look is “Method in Madness''. The information seems hidden and confusing, yet it is organized if one sees it closely. The concept is based on ‘camouflage in battlefield’ where everything seems like a chaos when soldiers camouflages in the trees and the bushes but,
when observed closely, one can understand the planned positions and each soldier playing a designated role.
HOW TO READ THE MAP :
Please refer to the demarcation in the image while following the steps below for better understanding :
Step-1 : Read the introduction of the project_top left corner.
Step-2 : Read the legend to understand the meaning behind the colors_top right corner. Step-3 : Read different phases of the project’s process journey starting from left. Read the details of each phase in each chunk marked in blue.
Step-4 : Read the application of the outcomes at different levels of army_bottom of the map.

2020
Nearly 40% of adult Americans are diagnosed with obesity, a preventable disease with links to heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. Globally and nationally, one in five children
and adolescents are overweight. However, our map seeks to dissect the myriad of systemic issues that concentrate obesity likelihood at the lower ends of
the socioeconomic spectrum. This map uses categorical labels to develop a rich holistic picture of the problem, allowing us to understand obesity as a problem of many roots and within multiple
hierarchies. Our group could create this visual guide that tells the story of obesity as we know it and granted us the knowledge to propose design intervention through Meadows' leverage points.

New technologies seemingly integrate at ever-increasing rates into consumers’ lives and minds. Virtual reality (VR) exemplifies this phenomenon by provoking psychological presence, a “sensation of ‘being there’” (Bailenson ) that marks the threshold between any other fabricated experience, such as watching a video, and full immersion into a virtual world.
We conducted our analysis by mapping out the following three aspects of commercial VR: 1) its
hard and software architecture; 2) a core algorithm that would produce user belief in acting on climate change; 3) the broader world within which
commercial VR and human-induced climate change operate. In our study of, we found that social
influence could enable a feedback loop that
activated commercial VR as a continuously more powerful agent to fight the causes of
climate change.

2019-2020
The aim of this gigamap is to describe and
summarize a student work carried out during the semester course Open Systems Design at Politecnico Torino. The map is one of the outputs from an analysis of the Canavese, Piedmont region and subsequently an in-depth study of the relationships and “flows” with certain “currencies” between some selected economic and public actors. Canavese is a historical-geographical area located in the province
of Turin, Italy; it’s full of great natural and geological spots, with a strong enogastronomic identity,
historical re-enactments, a well-known manufacture sector like the ceramic of Castellamonte, as well as
the leading high-tech branch like Arduino.
HOW TO READ THE GIGAMAP
The reading should start at the top left, where the abstract is located, next there is an outline that
shows the connections between the five topics investigated. Subsequently, there is a timeline with some fundamental events in the history of the Canavese. In the center there is the circularity map with the main cities, focusing on new opportunities
of circular flows between the 15 analysed economic actors. At the bottom, some general data and on the right a brief description of the role and territorial qualities of the companies. Lastly there is a
summary of the emerging properties.

free city center policy in Oslo. The map details
relevant facts and reflections and also touches
topics ranging from “what do people go to the city center for?” to “is there a kind of paradox in
developing autonomous systems that might make
us less autonomous ourselves?” As this is a few
years old all facts may not be up to date, yet the hopes, concerns and reflections surrounding both topics are still relevant, like for instance the concentration of Oslo city life along a route humorously nick-named the city life banana for its shape. This project combined service, interaction and product design.

The control over resources like money, commodity
and information can lead to a drastic socio-economic inequality and mindless consumerism has led to climate change. Our project is a systemic exploration of the most basic physiological need of food and highly influential control means called markets. Systems thinking helped provide us with a
perspective of a much larger scale and intricacies of interconnectedness between the different elements
in the said system and the problems identified from this point of view seem to be at the very core of the wicked problem at hand. We approached to intervene in the system to either overthrow it or change it or subvert it.

Wicked Problems:
The Opioid Crisis

Carnegie Mellon University School of Design.
2020
Over recent decades, the opioid crisis in the United States has become the worst addiction epidemic in
our nation’s history, and present research shows an upward trend in opioid-related death rates in northeastern states especially. This gigamap serves
to visually represent the current causes and effects, inputs and outputs, stakeholders, and feedback
loops that fuel this wicked problem (Rittel & Webber, 1973) while demonstrating the interconnectedness
of individual facets in the system. In response to the crisis, the map proposes several leverage points (Meadows, 1999): A unified drug education system, Enforcement of legal prescriptions, Increase in
needle exchange programs, Increase in job opportunities for past addicts, Wastewater filtering, Decriminalization of illicit substances
How to Read a Map
The concentric layout represents the scalar
complexity of the opioid crisis. Each oval demonstrates “personal,” “communal,” and
“national” lenses along with the change in hue as
the scale increases. The information on the map follows a linear flow, beginning with “inputs” and concluding with “outputs.” Many of the
subcategories, however, cannot simply be
represented in a linear format, thus the yellow lines demonstrate the interconnections and loops that
exist within the nodes. The placement of the yellow numbered dots on the map represent where in the system designers will intervene, and corresponds to the intervention methods listed below the map.

Depression rates among adolescents and young adults have been on the rise in modern times. Recent studies within the decade have shown racial discrimination and academic pressure, among
others, to be correlated with higher rates of
depression. There are currently few or no giga maps that have this broad array of factors together to help us understand the problem. This study identifies the factors related to adolescent depression and synthesizes them into an informative visual map
for a more comprehensive understanding of a
large-scale systemic issue. This understanding can help designers spot the root causes and effectively apply interventions. Through giga-mapping, we are hoping for more designers to become open-minded towards fixing these daunting complex world problems.

Unbeknownst to a majority of public, this issue has engulfed 37% of the American population. Layers of interconnectivity bury complications from the public eye, making large-scale issues like obesity difficult to tackle. Our group aims to uncover this complex

we were able to identify harmful feedback and formulate targeted interventions to break the cycle.
Our gigamap presents a complex system in an accessible format aiming to provoke a unifying interaction amongst users, inform at all levels, hopefully, engage them to get to a healthier America.

This work in progress aims to integrate a variety of living and non-living agents within the community in codesigning flourishing environment with and for All. The preoccupation with defining the legal person in anthropocentric terms highlights what is of value
to an [Anthropocene] society. The fact that the environment in most legal systems does not have legal personhood status, but that corporations do, is indicative of the fact that contemporary western societies see the natural world as being for-profit (Hutchison, 2014). The project aims for transition towards the era of Post Anthropocene where living

ABSTRACT
The aim of this Gigamap describes and summarizes
a student work carried out during the semester
course Open Systems Design at Politecnico di Torino. This is one of the outputs from an analysis of the
High River Po Valley area in the Italian Piedmont.
The analysis was conducted through five economic sectors: nature & ecosystem services, tourism,
mobility & infrastructure, local craft activities and agrifood. The investigation of the territorial economy was carried out by giving particular attention to the production sectors characteristic of the territory and examine their production lines. The Gigamap will be presented to stakeholders in a public hearing and
used to illustrate and incubate a more circular economy that is more resilient and more regenerative.
HOW TO READ THE MAP
The reader can find in the first part an abstract with
the aim of the Gigamap, the five topics for the investigation and actors’ selection, a timeline about important events and some peculiarities of the territory. In the middle, the territorial map of a suggested improved territorial economy based on circular flows: the 16 actors are localized on the territory with new circular flows “designed in”
between them. The boxes describe connections for new circular opportunities, with flows explained
under the territorial map. Finally, some data about
the territory and the three main outputs emerging
from the new circular linkages.
